This is a fun competition for photographers of all abilities to celebrate the beauty of birds of prey!

Featuring six main categories, this competition (the calendar competition) gives photographers, both amateur and professional, the chance to show off their talents and have their work appear in print as we will produce the six category winners and six runners-up in the 2014 Hawk Conservancy Trust Calendar, which is sold in the Trust shop and on-line.

Categories for the photographic competition :

  1. Portrait. Best portrait photograph of a Hawk Conservancy Trust bird of prey.
  2. Action. Best photograph of a Hawk Conservancy Trust bird of prey in a flying display.
  3. Working relationship.Best photograph demonstrating the relationship between a member of Trust staff and a Hawk Conservancy Trust bird of prey.
  4. Flora and fauna. Best photograph of the wildflowers, shrubs, plants, trees, insects, mammals and wildlife around the grounds of the Trust (excludes birds of prey).
  5. In the wild. Best photograph of a wild (non-captive/non-Trust) bird of prey taken in its natural setting.
  6. Young Photographer. Best photograph in any category, taken by an under 16 year old.

Please note that all photographs must have been taken either on the Trust grounds or at other locations where Trust birds are displayed by Trust staff, with the exception of those entered into the 'In the Wild' category.

Caption Competition: running parallel to the calendar competition is a caption competition that adds an element of humour to the images. Each month, a photograph will be posted on the Hawk Conservancy Trust website and captions for it invited. The caption most enjoyed by our ‘judge of the month’ will go forward to the end of the year, when a final judging will select the overall winner.

Entry: in order to enter for the calendar competition or the caption competition a one-off entry fee of £5.00 must be paid to the Trust (one fee covers both competitions). Submission of caption suggestions is free of charge!

Please read the 2012 Competition Rules carefully, and complete and submit the on-line form

Closing date: the closing date for the calendar competition and caption competition will be 31st December 2012.

Judging: winning entries will be judged by a panel chosen from our corporate sponsors and Trust staff. TV presenter and zoologist, Chris Packham, will choose the overall winner for 2012

Awards: each calendar competition category will be awarded a winner and a highly commended. Both will receive a wildlife digital photography book, and the section winners will win a photographic day at the Trust. The overall calendar competition winner and a guest will be invited to attend one of the Hawk Conservancy Trust’s photographic experiences.

The overall photographic competition winner and a guest will also be invited to attend one of Wild Arena’s UK photographic workshops, at a zoological collection of their choice.

There will also be a caption competition prize for the best caption, and for the photograph to which the caption was applied!
