Colin says "The dark background behind the Bald Eagle meant I was able to virtually lose the darker plumage of the bird to leave only the head apparent. I didn’t use any trickery at all, only the available light. |

This Osprey was nesting on a cartwheel fixed to a pole at a sailing club in Maryland, USA (June 2002). There were juveniles in the nest but the birds seemed used to people. Digiscoping allows distant photography which does not disturb the birds if you are careful. |

The juvenile Kestrels were nesting in a rotten tree in the Itchen Valley (June 2002). The picture was taken at only 1/4 second with a focal length equivalnet to about 2500mm. To be succesful this picture required a combination of good light (a 6.30 am visit necessary to have the sun in the right position), steady tripod, remote shutter release, zero wind-speed and lots of luck! Again because of the distance between me and the birds they were not disturbed at all and fledged succesfully a few days later. |
