An introduction to Buzzards

Facts

Genus Buteo, which is Latin for Buzzard. There are about 25 species, mostly in the New World. The vast majority of buzzards are medium sized. As a whole, however, the genus ranges from small to large. They are absent from S.E. Asia and Australasia.

Features

Buzzards have rounded, broad wings, and a broad tail. In most species the legs are bare. Colour variations (or phases) are quite common within individual species.

General

Many buzzards are dynamic hunters, and more than half are commonly known as hawks. Many species eat a large amount of carrion. Variation in colour can be dramatic in some species, with the European Buzzard ranging from very pale to a very dark brown.
Buzzards were once relatively common in Great Britain, but they suffered a major decline in members during the 20th century. The major populations retreated towards the West of England and Wales. There are now far more buzzards to be seen, and The Hawk Conservancy Trust has contributed to this by running a breed and release programme for the last 20 years.
