Photographic Competition 2002 Winners

The judging of readers' photographs for 2002 is now complete. We started with 291 photographs from 40 photographers.

A panel of three judges - The Hawk Conservancy's Director, official Photographer and Webmaster considered all of the photographs. We were all impressed with the very high standard of all the entries, and should like to pay tribute to the skills displayed and to thank you for allowing us to display your work.
Selecting five photographers to go through for final judging was not an easy task, and in arriving at a compromise, each of us sacrificed a couple of favourites. Judging photographs is a very subjective task and, those that were not included in the final five can take comfort from the fact that many were so close!

The final five (in alphabetic order), Andrew Cawte, Duncan Jennings, Steven Noyes, Steve Shuttleworth and Paul Tiller (a total of 74 photographs) were passed to Wildlife Artist & Falconer Antony Rhodes, who spent almost a week deliberating and scoring before arriving at his top three photographs. The winners have been notified.
We offer our congratulations to them and to the other finalists, and our thanks and congratulations to all participants for the very hiigh standard of entries.

The winners

Brown Falcon Steve Shuttleworth wins First Prize of one Activity Day for this study of a Brown Falcon
European Eagle Owl Andrew Cawte wins Second Prize of two adult Owls by Torchlight vouchers for this portrait of Watson - our female European Eagle Owl
White-bellied Sea Eagle Duncan Jennings wins Third Prize of a one-off discount valued at £20 at our online shop for this striking image of Fraggle, our White-bellied Sea Eagle demonstrating his ability to snatch food out of the air - natural behaviour in the wild, where he would take animals like fruit bats.
