The nest box scheme that gives a homeless bird of prey somewhere to live.
|
The lack of suitable nest
sites has been a cause of population decline for several bird of prey
species in this country over the last 50 years. Whilst areas of otherwise
suitable habitat may exist, without nest sites and breeding success, populations
cannot be sustained and will decline.
Since 2005 the Hawk Conservancy Trust has been assisting the Imber Conservation Group and the Barn Owl Conservation Network to monitor owl nest boxes in South Wiltshire. To complement this project and extend the area of conservation
work, from 2008 the Hawk Conservancy Trust will run a nest box installation
and monitoring scheme called Fund-a-Bird. Fund-a-Bird will enable supporters
to assist the work of the Trust by contributing directly to the conservation
of raptors and owls in the wild.
By becoming a supporter your money will go primarily towards the construction, installation and monitoring of nest boxes for four species: Barn Owl, Kestrel, Tawny Owl and Little Owl. Following habitat surveys and landowner liaison, the boxes will be installed in suitable habitats in the Hampshire and Wiltshire area. Staff from the science and conservation department
of the Trust will monitor and maintain the nest sites throughout the year.
Chicks that hatch in the boxes will be ringed with British Trust for Ornithology
rings so that their future progress can be followed. As a supporter you
will receive an annual report that describes the activities in your boxes
over the year, an overview of the whole project, and information about
the research work associated with this scheme, and other ongoing Trust
projects.
The cost of supporting Fund-a-Bird is £130 per year. Supporters can be individuals, schools, groups or workplaces. Fund-a-bird would also make an interesting and alternative gift for Christmas, birthdays or weddings. Supporters receive:
Each supporter and a guest will be able to visit the
Trust for a day. The visit will include a morning presentation on the
Fund-a-bird scheme and a trip to the Trust’s wildflower meadow to
discuss habitat for birds of prey and nest box installation. These visits
will be available on specific dates throughout the year.
The names of all supporters will be displayed at the Trust to show their support of the scheme. For schools, colleges or groups (within a 30 mile area of the Trust) that join the scheme, the Trust can visit and give a presentation about project.
