The Hawk Conservancy Trust Photographic Competition 2008

For the 2008 season the Hawk Conservancy Trust is again running an international photographic competition to celebrate the beauty of Birds of Prey.

Featuring 6 categories, this competition gives photographers, both amateur and professional, the chance to show off their talents.

The categories are:
  1. Portrait. Best portrait shot of a Hawk Conservancy Trust bird of prey.
  2. Action. Best photograph of a bird in a flying display at the Trust.
  3. Working relationship. Best photograph demonstrating the relationship between a member of Trust staff and a bird of prey.
  4. Flora and fauna. Best photograph of the wildflowers, shrubs and plants around the grounds of the Trust or the wildlife that is found there.
  5. In the wild. Best photograph of a Bird of Prey in the wild.
  6. Junior. Best photograph in any of these categories, taken by an under 16 year old.

In order to enter the competition a one off entry fee of £5.00 must be paid to the Trust.

Closing date for the competition will be 31st December 2008. Entries received each month can be viewed by clicking on the name of the month in the table below.

Entries will be judged by a panel including TV presenter and naturalist Chris Packham, representatives of the 2008 competition sponsors "Wild Arena" Photography , wildlife artist Anthony Rhodes, our corporate sponsors, Arqiva and Festo, and Trust staff.

From each category a winner and a highly commended entry will be selected.

The category winners will receive a Photographic Day at the Trust, and a wildlife digital photography book to improve their skills. Their images will also go on display at the Trust. Highly commended entrants will receive a family ticket to the Trust.

The overall winner of the competition will be named Hawk Conservancy Photographer of the Year and will win the opportunity for themselves and a guest to attend one of the Wild Arena's Wildlife Photography workshops in the UK. Wild Arena have over 25 years of experience in providing their guests with a truly memorable day at a wide range of locations. For more information please visit their website www.wildarena.com.

All of the winning and highly commended entries will feature in the Hawk Conservancy Trust’s 2010 calendar, and those that feature a Trust bird will also be entered into the BIAZA 2009 photographic competition (where appropriate sections exist).

The entry form is available in (PDF) Portable Document Format and you will need Adobe Reader® software to view the document. If you do not already have Adobe Reader®, you can download it free of charge from Adobe®.

If you open the PDF and it appears as a blank page the likely cause is that an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader® is installed on your computer. You can upgrade Acrobat Reader® free of charge from Adobe®.

If you are using Mac OS X, Preview will try to open the PDF document by default, this does not support Acrobat Forms. Instead, you will need to download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader®, and open the document from Adobe Acrobat Reader®.

Print the completed form (or complete it by hand after printing) and sign it, then either return it to Tracey at the above address or scan and email it to Keith. You will need to complete an entry form to cover each batch of photographs you submit.

Competition Rules

  1. All entries must be taken during 2008, and must feature only birds at the Hawk Conservancy Trust or Birds of Prey in the wild.
  2. A maximum of two entries per photographer, per category each month is allowed.
  3. All entries may be sent electronically or on disc. Images should be supplied in JPG format at a minimum resolution of 72 dpi or in an alternative high resolution format suitable for printing.
  4. Images sent by email may be resized to a minimum of 800 pixels on the longest side and a maximum file size of 2 MB. The images must be sent as email attachments and the size of the email and all attachments must not exceed 10MB
  5. We are sorry but this year we are unable to accept entries in print format.
  6. All images must be originals and must not have been digitally enhanced or manipulated.
  7. The competition is open to amateur and professional photographers, please indicate on the entry form.
  8. In order to enter the competition the entrant must pay a one-off entry fee of £5. The fee may be paid on line (click here), at the Trust shop, by credit or debit card by calling the main office on 01264 773850, or by cheque made payable to The Hawk Conservancy Trust
  9. An entry form must accompany each entry, and must contain the photographer’s name, address and telephone number.
  10. There will be no cash alternative to the announced prizes, and the judges’ decision is final.
  11. Copyright. You must be the sole author and owner of the copyright for all images entered. By entering your images into the competition, you give the Hawk Conservancy Trust (HCT) a non-exclusive licence to reproduce the images for any purpose in connection with the competition including, but not limited to, the following purposes: judging the competiton, display of winning entries held at the HCT, inclusion into the BIAZA photographic competition, inclusion within HCT marketing and promotional material and for use in HCT merchadise. The HCT reserves the right to display, reproduce and publish in any media any entry, without payment, for the sole purpose of the HCT and its promotion and publicity. Should the Trust use any image for promotional or other purposes every effort will be made to give credit to the photographer.
  12. The competition is not open to members of the Hawk Conservancy Trust staff and their immediate family.
  13. Junior entries must show entrant's age.
  14. Monthly entries will be displayed on the Hawk Conservancy Trust’s web site at www.hawkconservancy.org.
